{"id":11,"date":"2007-06-06T13:02:13","date_gmt":"2007-06-06T20:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/potlach.org\/feast\/?p=11"},"modified":"2011-01-03T19:45:11","modified_gmt":"2011-01-04T02:45:11","slug":"recombinant-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/potlach.org\/feast\/2007\/06\/06\/recombinant-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Recombinant Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past several years, I&#8217;ve occasionally used the phrase &#8220;recombinant data&#8221; when talking about the Semantic Web. Recently at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.semantic-conference.com\/\">Semantic Technologies 2007 conference<\/a>  I attempted to give this term a definition during one of my talks:<\/p>\n<p><cite> the ability to rapidly recombine, reform, re-factor and reuse data from different applications to address a particular task, need or objective<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/zepheira.com\/talks\/em-semtech-20070524.ppt\">Eric Miller, President Zepheira &#8220;The Business of Recombinant Data&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not quite right, but close&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Passing this definition though a syllabic minimization filter yields: &#8220;when it comes to  data &#8211; write once, use often&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The talk went on to demonstrate the benefit of recombinant data by using various practical tools the <a href=\"http:\/\/simile.mit.edu\/\">Simile folks<\/a> have been developing to solve specific use-cases. And from there connecting these examples back to real-world problems that enterprises are grappling with in terms of more efficient, flexible means of supporting data integration and ultimately effective business intelligence. And while I&#8217;m admitedly bias in my assessment, it seemed to go over extremely well.
